Psychiatric Assessment

Assessment Process

It is well known in psychiatric practice that assessments are not just a fact finding mission but is the beginning of a therapeutic relationship which is the cornerstone of management. Along with this other important goals are to:

The assessment process lasts up to 90 minutes. The length of time depends on the complexity of presentation and the richness of background information. Very rarely the assessment might need to be spread out over two sittings.

For patients with health insurance a GP referral is essential. Even for self funding patients a GP referral is good practice. Also please consider carefully who you might want to be present at the assessment to provide you support and speak on your behalf if needed.

In addition to the presenting complaints, information is gathered on past history (psychiatric/medical), family history, personal (including developmental) and social history. Collateral (GP, family members etc) information is very helpful in diagnostic formulations. However information will be sought and not disclosed without the patient's consent (except in circumstances where it is essential for managing high levels of risk). Certain presentations might necessitate administration of certain scales that help either with the diagnosis or with monitoring symptoms over a period of time. As standard patients and GPs will receive a copy of the assessment report (unless a specific request is made not to). All information gathered will be stored safely and in accordance with Royal College guidance. If information is being gathered to draw up a report clients will be informed in advance that statements made during the review will be included in the report.

Following the assessment a detailed letter will be sent to the GP into which you will be copied in. If you do not wish this to happen please inform Dr. Kar Ray during the assessment. Special provision could be made for you to read the letter prior to it going to the GP.

An Initial Psychiatric assessment (up to 90 minutes) costs 300£s.

Please Note: The fees does not cover the cost of medications that a client may need to purchase on a private prescription. Nor does it include the cost of any biological investigations (blood tests / CT or MRI scan etc) if indicated. You will be informed of expenses involved in conducting such investigations.
